00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:23.920
Okay, can I ask you something kind of uncomfortable right out of the gate?
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:33.759
When was the last time you told someone, it's gonna be fine, I just know it, and you weren't actually sure if it would be or not.
00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:40.479
Maybe you were just trying to comfort a friend, or maybe you were trying to talk yourself down off a ledge.
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:44.880
Maybe it just felt like the right thing to say in the moment.
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:47.520
We've all been there, I've been there.
00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:50.399
But here's the thing that's been sitting with me.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:54.159
And honestly, it's what this whole series is about.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:58.719
Where is that confidence actually coming from?
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:04.480
Because there's a version of that statement that is rock solid, anchored faith.
00:01:04.719 --> 00:01:10.959
And there's a version of it that's just optimism dressed up like faith.
00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:15.519
And today, we're gonna figure out which one is which.
00:01:16.319 --> 00:01:17.519
Hey, welcome back.
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:21.599
I'm Melissa, and this is my question for you.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:31.120
We are in our series called The Language of Faith, where we're slowing down and actually examining the words we use when we talk about God.
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:39.280
Because as we said last week, the way we speak about him reveals what we actually believe about him.
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:50.640
Last week we pulled apart the difference between wishing and hoping, and we found out that biblical hope isn't fragile like a flickering candle.
00:01:50.879 --> 00:01:52.159
It's an anchor.
00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:59.519
So if you miss that one, I want you to go back and start there because it sets up everything we're doing in this series.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:03.200
Today, we're taking it one step further.
00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:11.680
Today's question is this is what you're calling faith actually just optimism?
00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:22.960
Okay, so let's just go ahead and name it.
00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:28.719
Most of us use the words faith and optimism kind of interchangeably.
00:02:28.960 --> 00:02:35.680
Like we say we have faith, but what we really mean is I think it'll probably work out.
00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.080
And that's not a character flaw.
00:02:38.159 --> 00:02:39.360
That's just human.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:43.919
But they are not the same thing, and the difference matters.
00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:47.199
Here it is, as simply as I can put it.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:58.000
Optimism believes things will probably work out, but faith believes God is faithful, even if they don't.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:04.400
Optimism is rooted in probability, faith is rooted in promise.
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:16.319
Optimism looks at a situation and says, the odds are good, faith looks at the creator and says, God is good.
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:21.439
And those two things are just not the same sentence.
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:32.639
In Hebrews 11, verse 1, we're told that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:36.159
I want you to notice something about that definition.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.639
Notice what's not in it.
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:50.000
There's no mention of favorable circumstances, no reference to a positive trend, there's no calculation of the likelihood that something is going to work out.
00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:53.759
Faith isn't built on what looks promising.
00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:58.080
It's built on who God has revealed Himself to be.
00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:06.479
Optimism rises and falls with the data, but faith stands even when the data disappears.
00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:10.159
Now, here's where it starts to get real.
00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:22.879
It's pretty easy to say, I have faith when the diagnosis looks manageable, or the job opportunity seems likely, or the door is swinging wide open for you.
00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:27.360
Faith feels natural when things are trending in your direction.
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:31.040
But what happens when the offer falls through?
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:43.759
When the relationship starts to strain instead of strengthening, when the answer to your prayer looks completely different than what you asked for, or when it just hasn't come yet.
00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:51.199
That's where optimism starts to wobble because optimism needs evidence to survive.
00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:54.639
Take away that evidence and the confidence crumbles.
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:59.920
Faith though, faith has a different foundation entirely.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:03.199
Think about Abraham for a minute.
00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:12.000
God had promised him something that seemed almost impossible, that he and Sarah would become the parents of a great nation.
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:16.800
The problem was Abraham was already old.
00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:23.120
Sarah was long past the age when having children was even remotely realistic.
00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:28.639
Years went by and decades, and still no child.
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:36.560
There was still no evidence that the promise was even unfolding, that God was even moving or anything was happening at all.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:45.920
By every human measure, the situation made less sense with time, not more, looked like it was never going to happen.
00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:55.519
But in Romans chapter four, it says he was fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
00:05:56.079 --> 00:06:00.160
Now, Abraham was not looking at a positive trend.
00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:15.839
If he'd run the numbers and looked at things more carefully, his age, Sarah's age, the decades of silence and waiting with nothing happening, optimism would have packed its bags and left a long time ago.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:19.680
But Scripture says he did not waver.
00:06:20.399 --> 00:06:24.800
He wasn't persuaded because the circumstances supported him.
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:30.959
He was persuaded because the one who made the promise was trustworthy.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:33.600
That's not optimism.
00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:36.319
That is anchored conviction.
00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:39.439
And there's a big difference between the two.
00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:44.160
Okay, so this is the part I really want you to hear.
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:49.519
Because I think this is where a lot of us get quietly tripped up without even realizing it.
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:54.160
Optimism assumes a preferred outcome.
00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:58.240
Faith entrusts the outcome to God.
00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:04.160
Optimism says, I'm sure this will go my way.
00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:10.560
Faith says, I trust God with whatever unfolds.
00:07:10.959 --> 00:07:24.000
And sometimes, if we're really being honest with ourselves, when we say, I just know this is going to happen, what we actually mean is, I really, really want this to happen.
00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:29.199
Those are not the same thing, even if they feel the same in the moment.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:42.000
There's a point in Daniel chapter 3 that I think is one of the most powerful examples of real faith in the entire Bible.
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:50.000
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are standing in front of a literal fiery furnace.
00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:52.160
Like, this is not a metaphor.
00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:56.399
The king is about to throw them into the fire.
00:07:56.720 --> 00:08:02.560
And here's what they say our God is able to save us.
00:08:03.199 --> 00:08:09.600
But even if he does not, we will still serve him.
00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:12.240
Did you catch that?
00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:20.480
Even if he does not, they didn't have a good feeling that they'd walk out without being burned.
00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:22.160
They had something better.
00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:27.439
They had a God they trusted regardless of the outcome.
00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:31.120
That's the even if of faith.
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:33.519
And it changes everything.
00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:38.080
Optimism says God will get me out of the fire.
00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:45.679
Faith says God is with me in the fire, whether He puts it out or not.
00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:52.639
If my peace depends on the outcome matching my plan, then I wasn't trusting God.
00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:55.039
I was trusting my plan.
00:08:56.159 --> 00:09:04.159
Biblical faith doesn't require guaranteed circumstances, it requires a trustworthy God.
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:15.279
So practically speaking, what does anchored faith actually sound like on a regular day in a regular conversation?
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:23.759
It sounds less like certainty about outcomes and more like certainty about character.
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:34.000
Instead of I know this will work out the way I want, it sounds more like I know God will be faithful in this.
00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:41.200
And instead of I'm not sure that nothing will go wrong.
00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:47.279
It sounds like even if something shifts, God doesn't.
00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:52.080
God is faithful, God stands firm, God stands strong.
00:09:52.399 --> 00:10:04.159
If everything around me is going out of control and my circumstances are beyond anything that I can make sense of, God is my firm anchor.
00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:11.759
That's not pessimism when you start to think, I'm not sure if things will go wrong or not.
00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:14.720
And that's not bracing for the worse.
00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:25.519
That is mature faith when you can keep your eyes on God, even when the wind and the waves around us are blowing like crazy.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:35.919
James chapter one tells us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance so that we can be mature and complete.
00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:43.200
Faith that's been tested isn't necessarily louder, it's just steadier.
00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:48.559
It doesn't need to perform its confidence, it rests in it.
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:58.320
All right, so here's the question I want you to actually sit with this week, because this is the real point of this whole episode.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:04.879
When you say you have faith, what are you actually leaning into?
00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:09.120
Is it faith or just optimism?
00:11:10.480 --> 00:11:13.279
Is it that things seem to be trending upward?
00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:15.759
Is it that the odds look good?
00:11:15.919 --> 00:11:21.200
Or is it that you've pictured how this is going to go and it seems reasonable?
00:11:22.480 --> 00:11:29.759
Or is it the unchanging character of God even if the odds were zero?
00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:32.720
Here's the honest truth.
00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:42.240
If your confidence collapses the moment the circumstances shift, what you had was probably optimism.
00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:49.759
But if your truth holds steady even when the picture changes, that's faith.
00:11:50.559 --> 00:11:53.600
And listen, this isn't meant to shame anybody.
00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:56.639
I'm not preaching this to just you.
00:11:56.799 --> 00:11:58.960
I'm preaching this to myself too.
00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:01.360
Optimism isn't bad.
00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:04.080
It's just not enough.
00:12:05.679 --> 00:12:10.720
It can comfort us for a moment, but it cannot sustain us.
00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:14.000
Only faith can do that.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:26.000
So here's what I want to leave you with this week.
00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:28.879
I want you to pay attention to yourself.
00:12:29.279 --> 00:12:33.279
Notice when you say, I just know it'll work out.
00:12:33.759 --> 00:12:36.000
And just pause for a second.
00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:41.360
Ask yourself, is this faith or is this optimism?
00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:51.600
And if you find that your confidence has been resting more on your circumstances than on the character of God, don't spiral.
00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:52.799
Don't get upset.
00:12:52.960 --> 00:12:54.720
Don't be hard on yourself.
00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:58.960
Just re-anchor yourself to the Word of God.
00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:04.159
Biblical faith is not loud certainty about the outcome.
00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:09.679
It's quiet, steady confidence in who God is.
00:13:11.200 --> 00:13:18.879
Next week, we're gonna look at another phrase that sounds totally reasonable, but carries a lot of hidden weight.
00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:22.720
That phrase is, I'm just being realistic.
00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:24.399
I'm just being real.
00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:30.639
We're gonna ask whether our realism is sometimes just a cover for something else entirely.
00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:38.159
You're not gonna want to miss this one, so I hope you'll come back and join me as we continue through our series of the language of faith.
00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:47.759
And until then, keep asking, keep listening, and keep examining the language that's shaping your faith.
00:13:56.799 --> 00:14:02.720
Before you go, if today's question stayed with you, I'd love to keep the conversation going.
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:17.759
Each week, I send a short email called This Week's Question, a Quiet Invitation, and it's a simple reflection to help you stay grounded, to pay attention, to dive deeper into God's Word, and to walk with God throughout your week.
