What’s Growing Where You Can’t See?

What’s Growing Where You Can’t See?

There are seasons when you’re doing all the right things—

 showing up, staying faithful, remaining consistent—

 yet nothing in your life looks different.

In this episode, we explore what it means to trust the growth that happens quietly.

Jesus reminds us that seeds can be growing even when we don’t understand how. Scripture, story, and everyday life come together to point us toward a deeper truth: not all growth is visible, and not all progress can be measured.

This conversation is for anyone who feels steady but unseen, faithful but unsure, or present in a season that feels ordinary and slow.

If you’ve ever wondered whether anything is really happening beneath the surface, this episode invites you to pause, listen, and consider a gentler question:

What’s growing where you can’t see?

✨ Encouragement for your spirit. Wisdom for your walk.

WEBVTT

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:00.400
Foreign.

00:00:19.519 --> 00:00:20.719
Let me ask you something.

00:00:21.839 --> 00:00:26.079
Have you ever had a season where you're doing all the right things?

00:00:26.850 --> 00:00:34.130
You're showing up, being faithful, staying consistent, but nothing in your life actually looks different?

00:00:34.130 --> 00:00:43.329
Yet this can happen not only in our faith, but in our work, in relationships, honestly, in everything we do.

00:00:44.049 --> 00:00:48.530
You're still going to the same job, still having the same conversations.

00:00:49.170 --> 00:00:53.329
You're still praying the same prayers and waiting on the same answers.

00:00:54.179 --> 00:01:00.579
And quietly, maybe you've wondered, is anything even happening right now?

00:01:01.380 --> 00:01:03.539
I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

00:01:04.099 --> 00:01:07.379
Because growth doesn't always feel like movement.

00:01:08.180 --> 00:01:11.219
Sometimes it just feels like repetition.

00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:16.659
Hi, I'm Melissa, and this is my question for you.

00:01:17.140 --> 00:01:25.939
This is a space to slow down, to notice what God might be doing beneath the surface, right in the middle of your ordinary life.

00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:28.060
And today's question is one.

00:01:28.060 --> 00:01:33.620
I think many of us are living in what's growing where you can't see.

00:01:43.459 --> 00:01:49.060
Last time we talked about stepping into a new season without rushing to reinvent ourselves.

00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:55.840
And once you start paying attention like that, this question tends to surface pretty naturally.

00:01:56.480 --> 00:02:03.120
Because there are seasons where you're not falling apart, but you're also not seeing breakthroughs.

00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:05.760
You're just kind of there.

00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:19.969
You're still being patient with people who test you, still choosing integrity when shortcuts would be much easier, still praying, even when it feels repetitive, still saying no to things you've outgrown.

00:02:20.210 --> 00:02:24.770
And maybe you're still saying yes to things that might even scare you a little.

00:02:25.569 --> 00:02:28.530
And yet you're just not seeing a shift.

00:02:29.250 --> 00:02:32.250
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

00:02:32.250 --> 00:02:33.330
We've all been there.

00:02:33.650 --> 00:02:41.330
And that's usually when we start asking God, am I actually growing or am I just stuck?

00:02:43.020 --> 00:03:00.379
We tend to measure growth by what we can point to, things that we can see or sense or feel like a promotion, a relationship change, a clear sense of direction, or prayer answered in a way that makes sense to other people.

00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:20.849
And sometimes growth looks like material things, whether it's a nicer car, a bigger home, maybe designer clothes, or how much better our life looks on Instagram or Facebook when we compare it to our friends while we're scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and going through the comparison trap.

00:03:21.569 --> 00:03:25.650
We live in a world that tracks progress constantly.

00:03:26.370 --> 00:03:30.289
But some of the deepest growth seasons don't come with proof.

00:03:30.930 --> 00:03:45.639
They look like staying emotionally steady in moments that used to send you spiraling, like responding differently in conversations that used to trigger you, or choosing rest instead of running yourself into the ground.

00:03:46.039 --> 00:03:52.599
Or maybe you're trusting God without needing His Constant reassurance that he's still with you.

00:03:53.319 --> 00:03:54.439
And the tricky part?

00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.439
You don't always notice these changes while they're happening.

00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:07.409
You just know that something feels a little different, a little quieter, a little slower, a little less dramatic.

00:04:08.050 --> 00:04:14.530
And that can make you wonder if anything is even happening, or if maybe you're doing something wrong.

00:04:15.729 --> 00:04:19.730
Jesus actually talks about this exact kind of season.

00:04:19.730 --> 00:04:25.730
In Mark, chapter four, he tells a story about a farmer who scatters seed on the ground.

00:04:26.850 --> 00:04:30.279
After the seed is planted, life just continues.

00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:32.199
The farmer goes to bed.

00:04:32.360 --> 00:04:33.399
He wakes up.

00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:34.920
Days pass.

00:04:35.720 --> 00:04:36.839
Nothing looks different.

00:04:37.399 --> 00:04:42.759
And as you read this story, nothing about it feels spiritual or overly impressive.

00:04:43.079 --> 00:04:49.879
But Jesus says the seed is still growing, even though the farmer doesn't know how.

00:04:51.000 --> 00:05:01.560
That line matters because it tells us that growth doesn't require our constant awareness or our understanding or our ability to track progress.

00:05:02.360 --> 00:05:08.439
Some things God is doing in you right now are happening quietly without you even realizing it.

00:05:08.439 --> 00:05:17.879
Yet growth is still real, even when it's unseen, when it's quiet, and even when you don't feel moved or inspired by it.

00:05:19.959 --> 00:05:21.800
Let's think about roots for a minute.

00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:29.069
Roots grow quietly underground, forming the foundation before anything rises above the surface.

00:05:29.870 --> 00:05:36.269
Roots develop in places no one sees, in darkness, in silence, and without applause.

00:05:36.750 --> 00:05:40.910
And let's be honest, most of us don't love seasons like that.

00:05:41.629 --> 00:05:44.589
No one admires or compliments the roots.

00:05:45.149 --> 00:05:51.629
But roots are the reason the plant can withstand the winds and the rain, yet continue to grow.

00:05:52.620 --> 00:05:55.100
So maybe this season isn't about acceleration.

00:05:56.060 --> 00:05:57.500
Maybe it's about stability.

00:05:58.459 --> 00:06:02.699
Maybe God is steadying you before he moves you.

00:06:03.819 --> 00:06:13.259
Maybe God is strengthening your emotional resilience or your discernment, or your ability to trust without feeling like you have to control everything.

00:06:14.300 --> 00:06:21.500
That kind of growth doesn't look impressive, but it changes everything later, when you find yourself in the middle of a test.

00:06:23.100 --> 00:06:27.019
Joseph's story in Genesis shows this so clearly.

00:06:27.819 --> 00:06:36.060
Joseph receives a promise early in life, a promise that his life would matter and that God had something significant planned for him.

00:06:36.699 --> 00:06:40.300
But then his life moves in the opposite direction.

00:06:40.939 --> 00:06:47.500
He's betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and taken away from his family.

00:06:47.579 --> 00:06:50.699
And everything that's familiar to him, everything that he knows.

00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:56.990
And just when things seem to be returning to normal, he's falsely accused and thrown into prison.

00:06:58.189 --> 00:06:59.149
Years pass.

00:06:59.790 --> 00:07:01.949
Not days, not weeks, but years.

00:07:02.750 --> 00:07:08.430
If Joseph were telling his story to us today, it would sound anything but inspiring.

00:07:09.069 --> 00:07:15.790
It would sound frustrating and so far from what a promise from God should be like.

00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:18.360
God, did I miss something?

00:07:18.920 --> 00:07:20.360
Was that promise real?

00:07:21.079 --> 00:07:25.240
Why does obedience keep leading me into unfair situations?

00:07:25.800 --> 00:07:28.759
But Scripture shows us what Joseph couldn't see.

00:07:29.560 --> 00:07:33.240
While he was serving, leadership was forming.

00:07:33.800 --> 00:07:38.600
While he was being treated unfairly, his integrity was deepening.

00:07:38.920 --> 00:07:45.250
And while he was isolated and imprisoned, discernment and patience were growing.

00:07:45.889 --> 00:07:51.889
So when the moment finally came, when opportunity met reality, he was ready.

00:07:52.370 --> 00:07:59.089
Not because life suddenly improved, but because growth had been happening quietly the whole time.

00:07:59.970 --> 00:08:02.129
God wasn't delaying the promise.

00:08:02.370 --> 00:08:04.129
He was preparing the person.

00:08:06.610 --> 00:08:09.410
That same pattern shows up in our lives today.

00:08:10.550 --> 00:08:15.589
Sometimes growth looks like putting in the work to stay consistent even when no one notices.

00:08:16.389 --> 00:08:27.910
It looks like choosing healing over bitterness, learning to pause before we clap back, and trusting God without needing constant updates or reassurance from Him.

00:08:28.790 --> 00:08:30.790
That kind of growth takes courage.

00:08:31.350 --> 00:08:39.129
Those seasons don't feel exciting, but if we let them, they will form us into who God created us to be.

00:08:39.690 --> 00:08:45.769
They shape who you're becoming, not just what you're achieving or what you can measure.

00:08:47.129 --> 00:08:54.809
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians, chapter 4, to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.

00:08:55.370 --> 00:09:00.809
Because what is seen is temporary and what is unseen is eternal.

00:09:02.259 --> 00:09:08.980
If growth feels invisible right now, it may be because it's happening beneath the surface.

00:09:09.620 --> 00:09:10.659
It's forming.

00:09:10.659 --> 00:09:13.620
What will hold you steady later in life?

00:09:15.139 --> 00:09:17.220
Here's a question you can carry this week.

00:09:18.340 --> 00:09:24.740
What might God be strengthening in me right now, even if I don't see results yet?

00:09:25.860 --> 00:09:28.659
You're not trying to fix this or force an outcome.

00:09:29.100 --> 00:09:31.460
You're just paying attention to what you sense.

00:09:31.460 --> 00:09:33.580
God may be strengthening in you.

00:09:34.379 --> 00:09:38.379
Create a habit this week of saying this quietly at least once a day.

00:09:39.340 --> 00:09:47.659
God, I trust that you're at work even here because he's working in the waiting.

00:09:48.139 --> 00:09:51.340
Even in the ordinary, repetitive parts of life.

00:09:52.139 --> 00:09:54.299
Don't let your faith be passive.

00:09:55.129 --> 00:09:56.730
Let it be grounded in trust.

00:09:58.090 --> 00:10:01.690
Just because things are quiet doesn't mean nothing is happening.

00:10:02.490 --> 00:10:07.049
God often builds depth before he reveals direction.

00:10:07.610 --> 00:10:10.090
That's not delay, that's care.

00:10:11.049 --> 00:10:15.610
He's an on time God, and His timing is perfect.

00:10:16.889 --> 00:10:18.730
So here's my question for you today.

00:10:20.259 --> 00:10:22.500
What's growing in you right now?

00:10:23.299 --> 00:10:29.860
Even if you can't see it yet, pay attention to what rises when life feels ordinary.

00:10:30.820 --> 00:10:33.220
That's where your growth is hiding.

00:10:42.980 --> 00:10:49.379
If this season feels slow but still steady, trust me when I say you're not behind.

00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:52.299
You're growing in ways that matter.

00:10:53.179 --> 00:10:59.419
In the dark places, in the lonely seasons, in the silent nights.

00:10:59.980 --> 00:11:03.340
Because God is already at work beneath the surface.

00:11:04.379 --> 00:11:13.659
Until next time, keep asking, keep listening, and keep trusting that quiet growth is still real growth.

00:11:20.250 --> 00:11:20.490
Foreign.

00:11:24.649 --> 00:11:28.889
If today's Question stayed with you, I'd love to keep the conversation going.

00:11:29.450 --> 00:11:43.929
Each week I send a short email called this Week's Question A Quiet Invitation, and it's a simple reflection to help you stay grounded, to pay attention, to dive deeper into God's word, and to walk with God throughout your week.
