What Comes With You Into This Season? - Season 2, Episode 1
A new year often brings momentum — new goals, new plans, and a desire to move forward. But before we rush ahead, Scripture invites us to consider something just as important.
In this opening episode of Season 2, Melissa reflects on Hebrews 12:1 and asks a question that shapes how we walk into the year ahead: What are you carrying forward — and what might God be inviting you to lay down?
This episode is a bridge between reflection and movement. It’s about discernment before direction, awareness before acceleration. Together, we’ll explore how the weight we carry — expectations, fear, habits, or even unexamined pressure — can shape our goals and our faith as we step into a new season.
If you’re entering this year ready to move, but longing to move wisely, this episode offers a grounded place to begin.
✨ Encouragement for your spirit. Wisdom for your walk.

WEBVTT
00:00:19.359 --> 00:00:22.640
As the new year begins, most of us are already moving.
00:00:23.039 --> 00:00:29.690
We're stepping back into routines, setting goals, and thinking about what we want this year to look like.
00:00:30.250 --> 00:00:38.329
There's a natural momentum that comes with January, a sense that it's time to go, to start, to move forward.
00:00:38.890 --> 00:00:43.130
But before we rush ahead, there's an important question worth asking.
00:00:43.929 --> 00:00:49.450
Not where are you going, but what are you carrying with you as you go?
00:00:50.570 --> 00:00:54.939
Hi, I'm Melissa, and this is my question for you.
00:00:55.500 --> 00:01:01.820
If this is your first time here, I want to extend a very warm welcome and thank you so much for joining.
00:01:02.380 --> 00:01:07.019
And if you've been walking with me for a while now, I'm so glad you're here.
00:01:07.819 --> 00:01:14.859
As we step into a new year and into season two of this podcast, it doesn't feel like starting over.
00:01:15.500 --> 00:01:21.200
It feels like we're continuing with greater intention and clear awareness.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:25.760
Because how we move forward is shaped by what we bring with us.
00:01:35.680 --> 00:01:41.200
There's a verse in Hebrews that has been sitting with me as I've thought about this new year.
00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:56.790
It's Hebrews 12, verse 1, and it says, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance, the race marked out for us.
00:01:58.230 --> 00:02:00.629
That verse assumes something important.
00:02:01.349 --> 00:02:08.310
It assumes we're already in motion, already running, already on a path that God has marked out for us.
00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:14.960
But it also acknowledges this not everything we carry helps us move forward.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:23.280
Some things slow us down, some things entangle us, and some things were never meant to come with us into the next season.
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:33.039
January invites us to set goals, to think about discipline, growth, change, habits, how we're going to be better.
00:02:33.360 --> 00:02:34.719
And those things all matter.
00:02:35.599 --> 00:02:44.400
But Scripture reminds us that before we focus on running faster, we need to pay attention to what we're carrying while we run.
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:52.479
Because you can be deeply committed to growth and still be weighed down by things God never asked you to hold.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:57.840
Goals matter, but discernment matters first.
00:02:58.879 --> 00:03:04.229
You know, every season we enter, we bring things with us, whether we realize it or not.
00:03:04.789 --> 00:03:10.789
We bring habits, we bring expectations, wounds that never fully healed.
00:03:11.430 --> 00:03:17.189
We bring responsibilities that God entrusted to us and burdens that he never did.
00:03:18.389 --> 00:03:25.030
Some things strengthen us for the journey and some things quietly drain us mile after mile.
00:03:25.990 --> 00:03:28.310
Hebrews doesn't tell us to quit the race.
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:32.879
It tells us to lay some things down so we can run well.
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.159
You know, I've learned this about myself.
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:47.520
If I don't pay attention to what I'm carrying, I can set meaningful goals and still feel exhausted and Tired and frustrated halfway through the year.
00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:50.719
Sometimes what I'm carrying is pressure.
00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:54.560
The need to prove something or to get it right the first time.
00:03:55.770 --> 00:03:56.729
Sometimes it's fear.
00:03:57.129 --> 00:04:05.689
Not loud fear, but just subtle hesitation that keeps me from fully trusting with what God has next for me.
00:04:06.969 --> 00:04:15.370
And sometimes it's grace lessons God has already taught me strength I didn't realize had grown.
00:04:15.849 --> 00:04:19.209
Because not everything we carry needs to be released.
00:04:19.850 --> 00:04:22.649
But everything does deserve to be noticed.
00:04:24.060 --> 00:04:35.019
One of the most comforting things about this verse in Hebrews is that God doesn't just care that we run, but he cares how we run.
00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:42.060
He doesn't push us forward blindly, but he invites us to move forward wisely.
00:04:42.939 --> 00:04:50.790
Throughout Scripture, God consistently calls his people to examine their hearts, their motives, and the weight that they're carrying.
00:04:51.430 --> 00:04:54.149
Not to shame them, but to free them.
00:04:54.709 --> 00:04:57.750
Because perseverance isn't about doing more.
00:04:58.389 --> 00:05:00.629
It's actually about carrying less.
00:05:02.230 --> 00:05:04.389
So here's my question for you today.
00:05:05.829 --> 00:05:09.110
What are you carrying forward into this new year?
00:05:10.310 --> 00:05:17.269
And just as importantly, what might God be inviting you to lay down so you can run with greater freedom?
00:05:18.310 --> 00:05:19.550
This isn't about judgment.
00:05:19.550 --> 00:05:20.790
It's about alignment.
00:05:21.110 --> 00:05:27.829
Because what you carry will shape how you walk, and how you walk will shape where you end up.
00:05:28.949 --> 00:05:33.110
So as you begin setting goals this year, try this simple practice.
00:05:33.910 --> 00:05:37.029
Before you ask, what do I want to accomplish?
00:05:38.069 --> 00:05:39.829
Try asking this instead.
00:05:40.709 --> 00:05:49.569
What do I need to release so I can move forward faithfully, so I can move forward freely and without distractions and interruptions.
00:05:50.529 --> 00:05:52.930
I want you to pay attention to what comes to mind.
00:05:53.889 --> 00:05:55.970
Bring it to God honestly.
00:05:56.850 --> 00:06:00.769
Awareness is often the first step towards obedience.
00:06:02.050 --> 00:06:06.850
So as we move through this season together, we'll keep asking questions like this.
00:06:07.250 --> 00:06:14.649
Questions that help us walk with clarity, with faithfulness, and with trust in the pace God sets for us.
00:06:15.290 --> 00:06:18.889
We're not rushing ahead, but we are moving forward.
00:06:27.930 --> 00:06:32.089
As this new year unfolds, don't just think about where you're going.
00:06:32.810 --> 00:06:35.850
Pay attention to what's walking with you.
00:06:36.730 --> 00:06:38.649
Carry what strengthens your faith.
00:06:39.449 --> 00:06:43.209
Lay down what slows down and hinders your stride.
00:06:43.850 --> 00:06:49.689
And trust that God knows the race marked out for you and will meet you every step of the way.
00:06:50.649 --> 00:06:58.250
So until next time, keep asking, keep listening, and keep walking forward with intention.
00:07:05.220 --> 00:07:13.860
Foreign before you go if today's question stayed with you, I'd love to keep the conversation going.
00:07:14.420 --> 00:07:19.860
Each week I send a short email called this week's question a Quiet Invitation.
00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:28.899
And it's a simple reflection to help you stay grounded, to pay attention, to dive deeper into God's word and to walk with God throughout your week.
